As busy business owners, it can often be easy to get stuck in the day-to-day tasks of our businesses: to-do lists, delivering our services, or back-end type work.
There’s no doubt about it, this work has to get done, but if we’re not careful it can come with one big drawback: we’re so wrapped up in our businesses that we don’t take the time to dream about what it can potentially become.
In other words, we get stuck in the version of the business owner we are right now.
That’s why it’s important to remember—and perhaps even schedule time—to let your imagination run wild and envision yourself as the business owner you’re aspiring to be.
What would that version of you look like?
What would it feel like?
What would that person do?
Maybe you know that the next level of growth in your business requires you to become more visible, either by going on podcasts or speaking in public or on video. And maybe the thought of that scares you a little (or a lot!).
Envision yourself as a person who’s great at it, who speaks with ease, confidence, and passion, and who proactively looks for ways to be more visible.
What would it feel like to be this version of yourself? What would that version of you do?
Or maybe you know that it’s time to scale your business and to do that, you need to hire a team—an idea that sends you into overwhelm or fear about how you’ll lead and manage other people.
Envision yourself as a person who’s an effective leader. See yourself leading in a way that employs your biggest strengths and feels right to you, and imagine the efficiency and increased productivity you see in your business because you have the help of a team
When you’re able to see yourself in a new light—as the business owner you’re aspiring to be—you’ll have an easier time identifying the behaviors you need to embody and the actions you need to take so you can actually become that version of you.

In those situations, it’s helpful to ask yourself these questions:
- Who, and what, do I aspire to do?
- Who is doing something at that level, even in a different industry?
- What people in business and life inspire me?
- What is it about those people that inspires me?
Taking the time to answer these questions will reveal a lot—about yourself and about what you value.
Once you have this information, you’ll be able to form a picture of the version of yourself you need to embody to begin working towards that growth.
It may feel a little weird to embody that new version of you at first, but with enough practice, you’ll not only “get into it,” you’ll grow into it.
What a wonderful gift that will be to your business and yourself!
