If you’re a business owner, you know how fast things move on a daily basis. Your business never sleeps, and there’s always a new benchmark to meet, a goal you’re striving for, and an upcoming quarter to plan.
It can be easy to skip over our successes and move right to the next task or goal. But stopping to celebrate and reflect on our wins can actually make you more productive and successful…not to mention a happier entrepreneur.
Why celebrating small wins doesn’t come naturally
Entrepreneurship, by nature, attracts people who have the drive to grow.
Most entrepreneurs want to build a thriving business, develop into better people, and serve customers in the biggest way possible.
They have a very strong inner push to create something, to make an impact, and to do whatever they can to tap both their own potential as a person and the potential of their business.
And while this is mostly all amazing, there is one huge pitfall to that strong inner push: it rarely ever stops.
If you’re not careful, you can very easily create a business (and a lifestyle) where you’re always pushing, grinding, and hustling.
Because as any entrepreneur knows…
—> there’s always one more goal to reach
—> one more financial milestone to make
—> and one more client target to hit
It can be a never-ending cycle where you get SO excited about hitting a particular goal and think that life will be amazing once in fact you finally do…
…only to find that it’s not quite as amazing as you thought it was going to be, so you push on to the next goal because surely THAT will be as amazing as you’re imagining it to be!
Celebrating your success is the perfect way to hit a brief pause on that strong inner push, give yourself a little time to acknowledge your wins, and recharge your mind and spirit for your next big business move. Read more: Share on XWhy celebrating wins helps grow your business
While hustle culture and the need to keep moving CAN lead to bigger and better business success, it can just as easily lead to two forms of kryptonite for any entrepreneur: burnout and apathy.
And burnout and apathy, it’s safe to say, definitely do not lead to growth. Cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset in the long-term means understanding and accepting the natural ups and downs of your business. That’s what makes you consistently productive and effective as an entrepreneur. That’s why it’s so important to celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
5 ways to celebrate success in your business
1) Plan ahead
Determine in advance what a great celebration would look like for you, and then make sure you do it when you have a business win. Add a few small milestones to your quarterly goal planning, along with a note on how you’ll celebrate once you get there. Print a milestone chart and hang it in your office, with your reward clearly marked and labeled once you hit it.
2) Do something you love
When you experience success, you also experience a natural high of positive energy that comes with it. Take a moment to embrace the feeling completely by doing something you love…that doesn’t have to do with your business.
- Treat yourself to a massage when you hit that income goal you’ve been working on…
- Take your favorite person out for dinner and champagne after the 500th subscriber joins your email list.
- Grant yourself a weekend getaway when you wrap a huge project…
- Buy fresh flowers on a day you really put yourself out there to market your business.
Whatever your celebratory act looks like, just make sure you follow through and give yourself this gift.
3) Celebrate your team
Taking the time to appreciate even small successes from your teammates helps your team feel both appreciated and valued. And, studies have shown that open communication and rewards can also increase both employee performance and overall job satisfaction. Send a note of gratitude, congratulate your team for their efforts, and otherwise remember that they are working alongside you to achieve your goals.
4) Pause and reflect
Take the time to give yourself a well-deserved high-five. It’s the perfect way to hit a brief pause on that strong inner push, give yourself a little time to acknowledge your success, and recharge your mind and spirit for your next big business move. You’ll not only feel more grounded in all that you’ve achieved, but you’ll also give yourself more fuel to keep going ahead full speed.
5) Document your wins
At the pace at which entrepreneurs operate, it’s so easy to forget what was happening this time last year, last quarter, and even last week! Jot down your wins and successes in a log or journal, or write a letter to yourself. Better yet, capture them as part of your goal-creation and planning process, so you have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve just done something great for your business.
