In a recent brandiD team meeting, I posed a question to the group: Do you know how your work transforms our clients’ lives?
Seven pairs of eyes stared back at me from the gallery view on Zoom.
Then one of them said thoughtfully, “Yea, I do.” The others nodded, smiling. As we continued to discuss, I shared my perspective, which is to help our clients “work” dreams come true.
I felt relieved, glad to know that they are aware of the impact they’re having and how their skills—whether it’s copywriting, website design, website development, brand strategy or project management—all work together to transform our clients’ businesses, brands, and livelihoods. That transformation can be epic because In many cases, our work helps people launch businesses that go on to define and refine their true purpose and greatly enhance their lives, as well as the lives of the people touched through their products or services.
After I asked the question of our team, I started thinking about how it’s such an important question for every business owner to ask of themselves, their team and even of their business.
Knowing how your business transforms people’s lives is critical for a few key reasons:
- It helps you monitor your offerings to be sure they’re operating and delivering the way you want them to.
When you know the transformation that is possible through your product or service, you have a built-in measuring stick to see how effective they are for your customers and clients. You can then make your offerings even stronger, or tweak or change them to make sure they’re as powerful as they can be. - It’s perfect marketing material.
There is nothing that sells more easily than a transformation your prospect really wants. Whether it’s weight loss, website design, dog training or anything in between, when you show the right people the way to achieve the transformation they want, they’ll most likely buy. Knowing the transformation your offering provides allows you to describe that change in your marketing, as well as through testimonials, case studies, and stories of current or past customers who can serve as evidence of that change. - It’s highly motivating for your team—and even for your clients.
People LOVE to work for a business that’s making an impact, especially one that’s easy to see. When you share the stories of how your business is impacting your clients, your team members are sure to get excited—and stay motivated to help as many more as they can. It’s also a huge motivator for your clients, too. Word-of-mouth marketing is super powerful, and it becomes effortless when your clients share their transformations from your offering with everyone they know. When people have a great experience, they WANT to share it with others.
So, how do you really nail down the transformation your business provides?
Start with your customer! Send out a survey to your past clients or call a handful of them on the phone, and ask them specifically how your product or service has impacted their lives. Then, compare that with the transformation you intended to provide when you created the offering.
